Blue Gourami is a hardy and eye-catching freshwater fish known for its shimmering blue coloration and calm but curious personality. A color form of the Three Spot Gourami, this species typically displays a soft blue to turquoise body with two dark spots along the side—the third “spot” being the fish’s eye, which gives the species its common name.
Blue Gouramis belong to the labyrinth fish family, meaning they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air from the surface. Because of this adaptation, they are able to tolerate a wide range of water conditions and are considered a durable choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
These fish are semi-peaceful and can coexist with many community fish such as larger tetras, rainbowfish, barbs, and peaceful bottom dwellers. Males may become territorial toward other gouramis, especially in smaller aquariums, so providing plants, driftwood, and hiding areas helps reduce aggression.
Blue Gouramis are active swimmers that appreciate aquariums with both open swimming space and planted areas. Their long, threadlike pelvic fins are used to explore their surroundings, often gently touching objects and other fish.
