Green Sailfin Molly is a lively and attractive livebearing fish known for its iridescent green body and the large, sail-like dorsal fin displayed by males. When fully extended, the dorsal fin resembles a small sail rising above the fish’s back, making this variety especially eye-catching in community aquariums.
Native to coastal waters of the southeastern United States and Mexico, Sailfin Mollies naturally inhabit areas where freshwater and brackish water mix. Because of this, they are very adaptable and can thrive in a range of water conditions, though they generally prefer slightly harder, alkaline water.
Green Sailfin Mollies are peaceful, active fish that do well in community tanks with other livebearers, tetras, rainbowfish, and peaceful bottom dwellers. They are social fish that enjoy being kept in small groups, and males will often display their impressive dorsal fins to attract females or establish dominance.
As livebearers, Mollies give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. In well-planted aquariums, fry may occasionally survive alongside the adults.
